Victims' montage 'was removed'

The fire service has said reports that a tribute to officers who helped in the aftermath of the Enniskillen bomb has been removed are incorrect.

It said what was removed was a montage of photographs of victims of the 1987 IRA atrocity and a picture of Enniskillen cenotaph.

"Following a complaint from a member of staff, it was removed from a wall in the town's station," read a statement.

DUP MLA Arlene Foster said: "This has caused a great deal of hurt."

'Targeted'

The UUP's Tom Elliott said he was "aghast that a simple tribute like this can be targeted in such a sectarian way".

The fire service statement continued that the removal of the montage was "to maintain an inclusive working environment for all".

"This complies with guidance advocated by the Equality Commission which states that 'emblems or displays linked to the community conflict over the past 30 years are best avoided'," it read.

The fire service says it "will be working with the local firefighters and the Equality Commission to help resolve this issue".
