One commuter told BBC Scotland that the vehicle's windows appeared to have been smashed. A 40-year-old, three 20-year-olds and an 18-year-old were detained for six hours and then arrested.
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said it was part of a pre-planned operation. The incident caused traffic congestion in the area. Police said it was a planned operation. The men are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday.
The incident caused consternation during the city rush hour, with commuters looking on as officers stopped the car.
Following the men's detention the car was taken off for examination.
