Police said they were trying to establish whether the teenager was involved in an "incident" with a group of people near Bickley Road at lunchtime on Saturday.
The boy had just started an education to employment course in mechanics at Wolverhampton City College.
A statement from his old school, Moseley Park School in Bilston, said: "He had a close set of friends and he was quite well thought of by staff and students alike.
"We were all really shocked because a couple of weeks ago we'd heard he'd been making excellent progress on his college course and he was really excited by it.
"He had a likeable personality and we extend our condolences to family and friends."
Friends have gone to the scene with flowers and left messages of support.
