The body of an elderly woman was found by firefighters tacking a blaze which had broken out at a care home. A neighbour tried to save an elderly woman whose body was found following a blaze at a sheltered housing complex.

Twenty seven residents, some who were confined to bed or disabled, were evacuated to safety. Many of them have since returned to the home. The woman, who was also elderly and did not want to be named, said the dead woman was in her 70s and was in bed when the fire started.

A spokesman added: "The residents and staff were initially evacuated to Aberystwyth police station and subsequently to the leisure centre in Aberystwyth while emergency overnight accommodation was arranged. John Meirion Jones, 70, who is a resident at the sheltered accommodation, said: "The incident has had a big impact on people here and residents are upset.
"The lady lived here for about five years. I spoke to her a few weeks ago and she told me she was going blind."
Mr Meirion Jones said he heard the fire alarm on Tuesday night and saw smoke in the corridors as he was being evacuated.
