Strathclyde Police have confirmed that the remains of a baby have been found in a bag on a cycle path in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde. Strathclyde Police have confirmed that the remains of a baby have been found in a bag on a cycle path between Greenock and Port Glasgow, Inverclyde.
It is understood that the body was discovered by a jogger at about 1740 BST on Wednesday. The body was found by a member of the public on the track in the Devol Glen area at about 1740 BST on Wednesday.
A police spokesman said pathologists would be investigating at the scene, which is in a wooded area, on Thursday. Pathology and forensic tests are being carried out at the scene.
Newspaper reports have suggested that the baby was not a newborn but a few months old. Det Insp Mark McGowan said: "Our enquiries are at an early stage. We do not know how long the body has lain or the circumstances of the baby's death."
Local resident Louise Williamson said she was horrified.
"It's horrible to think somebody has dumped a wee baby," she said.
"There are kids playing about there. You wonder how long it's been lying there and why nobody has missed a wee baby. It's horrible."
A post-mortem examination will take place.
