A serving Metropolitan police employee and a woman have been arrested under the Operation Elveden investigation into alleged corrupt payments to public officials. The pair were detained at their home in Berkshire at 5am on Tuesday on suspicion of conspiracy to cause misconduct in public office, Scotland Yard said. The 55-year-old man, whom Scotland Yard described as a member of police staff based at New Scotland Yard, and the woman, aged 48, are being interviewed at west London police stations. They take the total number of arrests under Operation Elveden to 74. Operation Elveden is being run alongside two other inquiries led by Scotland Yard – Operation Weeting, which is looking at alleged phone hacking, and Operation Tuleta, which focuses on computer hacking and other alleged privacy breaches. Earlier this month, Operation Elveden detectives arrested a 43-year-old freelance journalist in Northumberland on suspicion of conspiracy to cause misconduct in public office.
