The 20-year-old man was undertaking solo night-flying training when he crashed the single-engine aircraft on a farm, six kilometres from Hamilton airport, just before 8pm on Monday. The pilot, believed to be from New South Wales, died on impact, police said. Three investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) specialising in engineering and aircraft operations arrived at the scene, about 200km west of Melbourne, on Tuesday afternoon. "Over the next few days the team will examine the wreckage and accident site, interview witnesses, and collect maintenance and pilot records," the ATSB said in an investigation summary on its website. Investigators are calling for anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward. Our editors' picks for the day's top news and commentary delivered to your inbox each morning. |
