Red boxes and the TV programme Deal or No Deal catchphrase are being used in weekend drugs amnesty in Durham.

Three containers have been put in the Walkergate area for users to deposit drugs or paraphernalia before heading into the city's bars.

Durham Police said no action would be taken against anyone leaving anything in them.

PC Darrell Brown said the TV catchphrase had a "nice ring to it" and was used to attract people's attention.

"We're basically giving people a chance," he added. "Put your drugs in there or face the risk of being arrested later on in the night."

The force said officers would not approach anyone they saw using the secure boxes.
