Dan Panes, from First Great Western, said: "Network Rail was set to hand the line back at 05:00 BST and we hope to have it reopened as soon as possible. First Great Western passengers were able to use South West Trains services between Salisbury and Basingstoke.
"It's likely that most of our services to Exeter and the rest of the south west will be able to divert via Swindon.
"As soon as the problem is fixed, we will be able to run trains again."
