The men were in a Ford Sierra and the children were passengers in a Renault Megane. Police would not give details of the other occupants of the car. The men were in a Ford Sierra and the children, aged four and seven, were in a Renault Megane. Their mother was driving and was treated at the scene.
No further information would be available until formal identification had taken place, police said. Police said a local 17-year-old boy was in custody as they investigated whether a motorcycle was racing the Sierra at the time of the collision.
A Derbyshire Police spokesman said they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the cars in the area before the incident. Police appeal
A 12-year-old boy, the nephew of the Megane driver, was also treated at the scene for his injuries.
Both he and his aunt are recovering in hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
All those who died in the collision are believed to be from the Shuttlewood area but police have not yet released their identities.
