Part of a train has been taken out of service after it struck a cow, causing lengthy delays for passengers.

Operator Greater Anglia said the cow was hit by the Cambridge-bound train between Roydon in Hertfordshire and Harlow in Essex.

The cow, which died, was one of a number in the area at the time of the collision at 06:40 BST.

A spokesman for Greater Anglia said passengers were delayed for more than an hour.

The eight-carriage train was made up of two four-carriage sections. The front section was damaged and has been removed from service for repairs to be carried out.

He said services were now resuming between London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport and Cambridge but warned cancellations, delays and short notice alterations were likely until about midday.

A rail replacement bus service has been used to take passengers between Stansted Airport and Broxbourne.
