Westfield Stratford Breitling store raid: Five arrested
(about 2 hours later) | |
Five people have been arrested after an attempted "smash and grab" raid at an upmarket watch store in east London.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the Breitling shop on the ground floor of the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford was targeted at 00:05 BST.
The force said four males armed with axes and hammers smashed a window. A fifth waited in a vehicle outside.
Police said claims on social media that shots were fired were incorrect. There were no reports of injuries.
Screaming and climbing
Adam Hughes was in the shopping centre when the incident took place.
He said: "Me and my girlfriend were coming down the escalators from the cinema with a bunch of other people, near Primark and we see a big bald white guy running into Primark.
"We then heard banging noises, noises that sounded like flash bang grenades and men shouting 'get down, get down' at which point a flood of people started running towards escalators at the other end of the centre whilst screaming to get out.
"We heard what I can only describe as gun shots, maybe warning shots and a flood of men in balaclavas and bullet-proof vests armed with guns running towards a jewellery store.
"We then kept running into the train station with people screaming and climbing over the gates to get on to trains." |
