The former Conservative cabinet minister Lord Gilmour has died aged 81, his son David Gilmour has said. The former Conservative cabinet minister Lord Gilmour has died aged 81.
Ian Gilmour served as defence secretary in Edward Heath's Cabinet, and in 1979 was appointed Lord Privy Seal. He was also the foreign affairs spokesman. His eldest son David Gilmour said he died at the West Middlesex Hospital following a short illness.
He was critical of the government's handling of economic policy and did not enjoy good relations with subsequent prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Ian Gilmour served as defence secretary in Edward Heath's Cabinet before becoming Lord Privy Seal in Margaret Thatcher's first government.
In 1981, he was sacked but went to the House of Lords in 1992. He was sacked in 1981 and went on to the back benches where he remained until he went to the House of Lords as Lord Gilmour of Craigmillar in 1992.
