A nail bomb has exploded underneath a car, believed to belong to a teacher, near a top school in Liverpool. An explosive device, believed to be a nail bomb, has exploded in a teacher's car outside a school in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police has confirmed that officers are investigating a security alert at the school, which happened at about 1450 BST. No-one was injured by the device, which Merseyside Police described as "improvised". Local residents described it as a nail bomb.
A spokesman confirmed an explosive device was involved in the incident and there are no reports of any injuries. Supt Ian Pilling, of Merseyside Police, described the incident as a "despicable and unusual act".

St Edwards began life as a teaching centre called the Catholic institute in 1853. Runnymede St Edward's is a Catholic independent school for boys and girls between the ages of three and 11, and is Choir School to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Liverpool.
The school is an independent Christian Voluntary Aided school for boys and girls aged 11 to 18.
About 1,280 students currently attend the school, under the principal John Waszek.
