Det Sup Colin Leeman, of Merseyside Police, said: "The baby is in a healthy condition and is currently being cared for by hospital staff at the Liverpool Women's Hospital. Lydia Moore, head of midwifery at the hospital, said: "Zack is doing very well.
"I am very concerned about the welfare of the mother of the baby, and I would appeal to her to come forward as soon as possible so we can do what's best for both her and the baby. "He is in good condition and is feeding well but we are concerned about Zack's mum. She has given birth on her own with no medical assistance.
"Medical staff at the hospital believe the baby is just hours old and he is healthy, but we want to find mum so that we can check on her welfare and make sure she is OK. "She needs to get some attention from a doctor or a midwife. We have no idea what kind of delivery it was."
"Clearly this little boy needs his mum. Det Supt Colin Leeman, of Merseyside Police, said there was no connection between the baby and the house where he was discovered.
"I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who was in the area last night who may have seen something which could help us to identify mum to come forward." Mr Leeman added: "Medical staff at the hospital believe the baby is just hours old but we want to find mum so that we can check on her welfare and make sure she is OK."
House-to-house inquiries are taking place in the area. He described the little boy as being "a picture of health".
CCTV is also being examined to see if the mother was caught on cameras in the area.
