The McCanns were declared suspects in the disappearance of their four-year-old daughter on 7 September.
'Encouraging'
They are now back at their home in Rothley, Leicestershire.
The Portuguese authorities said their would be no change to the McCanns' status as "arguidos" - or official suspects.
They will be able to stay at their family home as long as it is registered with Portuguese police. There are no plans at the moment for them to be re-called to Portugal.
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said Mr and Mrs McCann were pleased at what they had heard.
"On the face of it it does appear to be encouraging," he said.
"Beyond that I cannot comment on the detail of it but Gerry and Kate were obviously pleased to hear this."
