http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/08/world/europe/britain-detente-over-gibraltar-sought.html Version 0 of 1. Britain and Spain have agreed to try to defuse tensions over the contested British overseas territory of Gibraltar, Prime Minister David Cameron’s office said Wednesday. Mr. Cameron spoke to his Spanish counterpart, Mariano Rajoy, by phone to express “serious concerns” about the tensions, which have flared in recent weeks and included a threat by Spain to restrict access to the territory. Mr. Cameron said that Britain was not willing to discuss Gibraltar’s sovereignty, but was open to talks on how to ease tensions. Spain disputes Britain’s three centuries of control over Gibraltar, a territory on the southern tip of Spain. |
