An SAS sniper who was given a suspended sentence for illegal possession of a pistol and ammunition is appealing against his conviction.

Sergeant Danny Nightingale, 38, was given two years' detention suspended for 12 months at a court martial.

It was the second time he had been sentenced after his original conviction was overturned on appeal.

Nightingale's solicitor said papers had been lodged with the Royal Courts of Justice.

Nightingale, of Crewe, was convicted at his retrial in Wiltshire in July and sentenced later in the month.

His original conviction for possessing a Glock 9mm pistol and 338 rounds of ammunition in his accommodation, near the SAS's Hereford headquarters, had been overturned on the grounds that he had been placed under "improper pressure" to plead guilty.
