An 87-year-old man suffered a stroke after a "savage and ferocious" attack by a man who broke into his Greater Manchester home.

The pensioner was woken by the man, who punched him several times in the face before taking his bank book, wallet and cheque book, police said.

He managed to call police to the house on Longfield Road, Bolton, in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said he was now being treated in hospital for a bleed to the brain.

Det Insp Denise Pye said: "This man was awoken, only to find an intruder standing over him making threats.

"Before he knew what was happening, he was savagely attacked.

"This was clearly a shocking crime and I'm sure people in this community will rightly be outraged at what has happened."
