Zimbabwe: Prime Minister Criticizes Preparations for National Elections
Version 0 of 1. Zimbabwe’s prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, said Friday that he was deeply disturbed by chaotic preparations for the nation’s elections next Wednesday, despite the African Union’s approval of the process. He warned that the state election commission did not appear to be in control of final arrangements, voters’ lists still had not been made available to candidates, and the registration of eligible voters on those lists was not completed. “This chaos will lead to inconclusive and contested results,” said Mr. Tsvangirai, 61, who is running against the nation’s longtime president, Robert Mugabe, 89. After Zimbabwe’s last violent and disputed election season in 2008, leaders from neighboring countries forced Mr. Mugabe to form a coalition government with Mr. Tsvangirai. |
