Man guilty of football row murder

A man who inflicted 29 stab wounds on a father-of-two during a row over a televised football match has been found guilty of murder.

Allan Tees, 23, of Bridge Road, Linwood, had denied murdering Kevin Keegan, 46, at a flat in Paisley's Ladyburn Street, in June, last year.

A jury at the High Court in Glasgow found him guilty by a majority verdict.

Tees snapped while watching an England and Brazil match. He has been admitted to the State Hospital at Carstairs.

The accused launched the attack after Mr Keegan said he hoped England would lose the match.

The court was told he had drunk the equivalent of 28 pints and taken three ecstasy tablets and cannabis.

He slashed Mr Keegan three times across the throat and stabbed him 26 times.

'Life imprisonment'

Defence counsel for Tees argued that he was suffering from a mental illness at the time and had diminished responsibility.

However, a jury convicted him of murder by a majority verdict.

Tees was remanded in custody on 7 June last year and transferred to the State Hospital in October.

Judge Lord Malcolm said: "You have been convicted of the murder of Kevin Keegan.

"There is only one sentence I can impose, namely life imprisonment.

"However, you are suffering from a mental disorder and will be admitted to the State Hospital meantime."

The case was continued for doctors to examine Tees and for a background report to be prepared by social workers.

Lord Malcolm deferred sentence until next month.

He will then decide the punishment part of the sentence and where Tees should serve it.
