Two men are recovering in hospital from stab wounds following a violent attack in Edinburgh.

The assault took place at about 2100 BST, in the Observatory Road area of the city on Sunday.

The pair were inside their silver Vauxhall Astra when it was forced to stop by another vehicle, possibly a silver P-registered Ford Escort.

They were then attacked by two men while inside the car, with both receiving multiple stab wounds.

The pair made off in an unknown direction, while the two victims were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where they remain in a stable condition.

No description of the suspects is available, but it is thought there were another two passengers in their car.

A police spokesman said: "This was a particularly vicious assault, which left both victims requiring hospital treatment.

"We want anyone who witnessed the incident, or who was in the area at the time and noticed anything suspicious, to contact police."
