Pictures from the plane crash at the resort of Phuket in Thailand dominate the front pages of the papers.

Both the Sun and the Daily Mirror report that at least 10 Britons died - but that there were some survivors.

The Sun says horrified onlookers described the plane splitting in two after sliding off the runway.

The Mirror says the pilot desperately tried to abort the landing as torrential rain and turbulence rocked the jet.

Bank woes

The trouble at Northern Rock bank fills many pages, with the papers expecting more customers to withdraw their money.

Several focus on what is said to be an attempt by the bank and the banking regulator to organise a takeover.

The Times says the aim is to rescue the UK's fifth largest mortgage lender before panic among customers leaves the bank beyond salvage.

The Independent says there are growing fears for its 6,500 staff, as the bank prepared for more mass withdrawals.

Economy warning

The Guardian says the turmoil over the Northern Rock bank has put an end to speculation on a snap general election.

In the Daily Telegraph, Alan Greenspan says that the UK's housing market is heading for a painful correction.

The former head of the US Federal Reserve warns of "difficulties" ahead as rising interest rates bring house price growth to a shuddering halt.

Mr Greenspan says the UK's economy is even more exposed to the current financial troubles than that of the US.

Madeleine search

A report in the Daily Express says Portuguese police believe Madeleine McCann may be buried at one of the holiest sites of the Catholic Church.

Officers are planning to launch a search at Fatima in central Portugal, the paper continues.

The Daily Mail says serious doubts have been cast over a crucial part of the police case against the McCanns.

Similar evidence gained by sniffer dogs has been dismissed as unreliable in a US murder trial, the paper says.
