No Political Motive Behind Killing of Assad Supporter, Lebanese Officials Say | No Political Motive Behind Killing of Assad Supporter, Lebanese Officials Say |
(about 1 hour later) | |
Lebanese authorities issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for the wife of a prominent Syrian television commentator and analyst who was shot dead on Wednesday in southern Lebanon and they arrested her brother and nephew in connection with the killing, said a prosecutor, Samih al-Hajj. The motive for the killing of the commentator, Mohammed Darrar Jammo, was personal and not political, Mr. Hajj said. He said Mr. Jammo’s wife left the door to the couple’s home open so the killers could enter. Lebanese authorities forwarded the arrest warrant to Syria, where the wife is believed to have fled after the killing. Mr. Jammo’s public role as a defender of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria prompted suspicions that Mr. Assad’s opponents had killed him. But the Lebanese Army said in a statement that the killing was not politically motivated. |
