Newborn boy found abandoned on Worcester doorstep Newborn boy found abandoned on Worcester doorstep
(about 1 hour later)
A newborn boy has been found abandoned in Worcester. A newborn boy has been found abandoned on a doorstep in Worcester.
The baby was found on the doorstep of a home in a residential part of the city earlier, West Mercia Police said. The baby was found wrapped in a bag in the Lower Wick area of the city in the early hours, said a spokesperson from the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
A spokesperson from the Worcestershire Royal Hospital, where the child is being looked after, said he had been named Joseph. The child is being looked after by nursing staff, who have named him Joseph.
West Mercia Police are to put out an appeal urging his mother to come forward. A press conference is being held at the hospital shortly. Patti Paine, head of midwifery at the hospital, said Joseph was in good health but it was "very important" his mother sought medical attention.
"Joseph was found dressed in a baby grow and wrapped in a blanket and bag on a doorstep of a home in Lower Wick," said Ms Paine.
"The doorbell was rung and the occupant found him and rang the emergency services."
'Concealed pregnancy' theory
She added it was thought Joseph had been born full term - or around his due date - in the last 24 hours and weighed 5.5lbs (2.5kg).
Ms Paine said: "It is likely Joseph was delivered outside a hospital and this was possibility a concealed pregnancy so it is very important his mother comes forward.
"She may be in urgent of need of medical attention. We can arrange a midwife to come to her if she contacts us but would rather not come to hospital."
It is not clear what Joseph's ethnicity is yet.
West Mercia Police have asked anyone with information to call 101.
Det Ch Insp Stacey Williamson, from the force, said police were called at around 04:30 BST.
"Like the health service our priority is finding baby Joseph's mother," she said.
