During the trial, Ipswich Crown Court heard how Mr Thompson had met Stefan Arbon, who had been sleeping in a tent in the park, before becoming acquainted with Wilson and Stanton.
They spent time drinking in Mr Arbon's tent before walking to Tesco in Copdock to buy more alcohol.
They had separated from Mr Arbon by the time they had returned to the park.
Sentencing, judge John Devaux said Mr Thompson had been found with 54 separate injuries on his body from punches and kicks.
He was described as being "vulnerable" after spending the night drinking, with Judge Devaux adding he was four and a half times over the drink drive limit.
There was a cheer of "yes" from the public gallery when Judge Devaux said Wilson would spend at least 20 years in prison.
Wilson was also given a two year jail sentence, to run concurrently, for perverting the course of justice.
