US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns is due to hold talks in Cairo later with leaders of Egypt's new military-backed government. US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns has held talks with Egypt's caretaker leaders, state media reports.
It is the first visit by a senior US official since the army ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi on 3 July. He met interim President Adly Mansour and Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi in Cairo, Mena news agency said.
Washington says Mr Burns will urge "an end to all violence and a transition leading to an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government". It is not clear what was talked about, but Washington had said he would seek an end to violence and a transition to an new "civilian government".
Mr Burns is the first top US official to visit Egypt since the army ousted President Mohammed Morsi on 3 July.
As well as meeting administration officials and military leaders, Mr Burns is also reportedly meeting business figures during his two-day visit.
A Muslim Brotherhood official said the group does not currently have a meeting scheduled with Mr Burns, the Associated Press news agency reports.
