Motorway shut as vehicle hits bridge Two airlifted after motorway bridge crash
(about 1 hour later)
A serious road crash has led to the A74(M) motorway in Dumfries and Galloway being closed northbound, police said. Two people were airlifted to hospital after a vehicle hit a bridge support on the A74(M) in south west Scotland.
Officers said a vehicle had crashed into a bridge support on the northbound carriageway, near Junction 16 Johnstonebridge. A third person was taken to hospital by road after the crash on the northbound carriageway of the motorway, near Junction 16 Johnstonebridge.
Police said there would be traffic congestion for some time. The condition of those who were injured was not known.
Air ambulances were called to scene and police said it was "a potentially serious road traffic collision". Police said the northbound carriageway, about six miles north of Lockerbie, was closed and would be for some time to allow investigations to be carried out.
The southbound carriageway has one lane open.
