A raft of new checks and measures for healthcare assistants is needed in the wake of the Mid Staffordshire hospital scandal, says an independent report. There is no minimum standard of training for healthcare assistants before they can work unsupervised, an independent report has found.
The Cavendish Review's aim is to ensure vulnerable patients are treated in a dignified way. Some were doing tasks usually performed by doctors or nurses, such as taking blood.
It says healthcare assistants (HCAs) should adopt a universal training system and gain accreditation before they can work unsupervised. The Cavendish Review was set up by the government to study the role of healthcare assistants (HCAs) in England after the Stafford Hospital scandal.
