The brother of TV chef Gordon Ramsay has been sentenced to 10 months in jail by a Bali court for possessing heroin.

Ronald Ramsay, 39, who sat quietly as the ruling was read out, was also fined £381 ($530) by the Indonesian court.

He was arrested in February after 100mg of heroin was found in his pocket during a search outside a supermarket.

His lawyer Erwin Siregar said the sentence was too harsh as the heroin was only for personal use. Ramsay said he has not decided if he will appeal.

Under Indonesia's tough drug laws, Ramsay could have faced up to 10 years in jail but the panel of three judges decided to be lenient after he pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.

Gordon Ramsay has tried to help his younger brother beat his drug problems.

After the initial arrest in February, a spokeswoman for the chef confirmed representatives were flying out to the Indonesian island to help his brother.

The Scottish celebrity cook has previously spoken of how his brother's problems have affected him.

He told Waitrose Food Illustrated magazine before the arrest: "I feel the pain, I feel it big time. I don't think that my mum at 60 should still be putting up with it.

"It is hard dealing with Ronnie. He is a major responsibility. It is like having an 18-year-old to look after."
