Muslim Imraan Adam, who has cerebral palsy, has fasted for Ramadan since he was 10 years old. However, Derby City Council said it could no longer pay for the extra care he needed to eat before sunrise. The former West Ham and Tottenham striker contacted Mr Adam via social media, offering to pay for the support he needed during the month. Mr Adam, who is unable to use his hands, has his meals fed to him by carers. 'Big admirer' The Malian footballer, who is currently playing in the Chinese Super League and is a Muslim, said on Twitter: "I want to pay for his extra care during Ramadan to help him fast." After contacting Mr Adam, he added: "He can now fast Ramadan in peace." Mr Adam, who graduated from the University of Derby with a first class journalism degree, said the extra care during Ramadan would cost about £30 a day. The weekly cost of his support is nearly £2,000. In the past, Derby City Council has paid for the extra care. However, the council said its challenging financial position and the substantial support Mr Adam already received meant it was no longer able to meet his request. Mr Adam said he felt "very humbled and privileged" by Mr Kanoute's offer. |
