A 21-year-old man has died while Kent Police dealt with a reported disturbance in Folkestone, prompting an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The IPCC was told about the death in the early hours of Sunday after the incident in the town on Saturday night.

Police went to Richmond Street at 22:46 BST after reports of a disturbance.

During contact with officers the man became unwell and was pronounced dead at the scene, the IPCC said.

"As this is the early stages of the investigation, no further details are currently available," an IPCC spokesman added.

Kent Police said the incident was referred to the IPCC which was mandatory in all cases involving a death following police contact.
