No more details have been released about the woman's identity. A post-mortem examination is due to be held to establish the cause of death. Police said she had been teaching at the jail and had left the building just over an hour earlier.
Police have appealed for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area from 1500 BST to contact them. Officers are speaking to staff and prisoners as part of their inquiries, but it is understood that her murder is not being linked to inmates.
The grounds of the prison have been sealed off while police carry out a forensic examination of the scene. The woman's body was found behind her car by a member of the prison staff.

Det Insp John Coull, who is leading the investigation, said: "We're asking that anyone who may have heard or seen anything suspicious or who saw something untoward in the car park to speak to us.
"It is not unusual for members of the public to use the car park to visit the prison."
The woman worked for private contractor A4e to deliver the Offender Learning and Skills Service.
A spokeswoman described the incident as a "tragedy".
