A women's hockey match had to be abandoned at the weekend after one of the players was struck by a firework.

Youths began letting off fireworks near where the intermediate game was taking place between a Belfast Harlequins team and Jordanstown seconds in Twinbrook.

One of the fireworks lodged in the helmet of the Jordanstown goalkeeper.

Jordanstown coach Ricky Lee said they rushed her to hospital following the incident, but "thank goodness there was no permanent damage".

"We had to take her to hospital straight away - she was complaining of a stiff neck and had lost hearing in one ear," he said.

"Her hearing did come back later on that evening."

Another rocket bounced off a post at the Brook Activity Centre and hit a player in the leg.
