At least 85 Hindu pilgrims have died after a lorry they were travelling in plummeted down a gorge in India.

Some 60 people were injured when the driver lost control of the lorry at a sharp bend in the western state of Rajasthan, said police.

The vehicle was carrying at least 150 people when it ploughed through a protective concrete barrier and plunged 24m (80ft) on Friday night.

Rescuers using cranes and searchlights recovered the dead overnight.

The accident happened near Nagbavji village, more than 550km (350 miles) south-west of India's capital, Delhi.

The passengers had been making an annual pilgrimage to the temple of Ramdev, which is revered by both Hindus and Muslims.
