He said the medical evidence was that the baby probably only survived because of the immediate attendance of paramedics and because the hospital was alerted.
Det Ch Insp David McCullan added: "Andrew Elson is a man who expected to exert complete control over his girlfriend.
"So complete that, when she announced her intention to separate from him, he was prepared to kill her and her unborn child rather than see that separation."
Elson will have to serve at least eight years before he can be considered eligible for parole.
