Police investigating the death of an elderly widow found gagged and suffocated in her flat have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

Mohinder Kaur, 81, who was known as Shanti, was found dead by one of her sons at her flat in Nutgrove Close in Kings Heath, Birmingham, on 25 August.

A local man in his 30s was arrested on Thursday morning.

The grandmother had been robbed of more than £1,000 worth of gold jewellery, including rings, bangles and chains.

Her door had not been forced open, but had been left unlocked, police said.

A post-mortem examination showed Mrs Kaur, who had five children and a number of grandchildren, died from suffocation.

The victim, who was hard of hearing and spoke little English, was last seen alive in nearby Albert Road on the evening of 25 August.
