Version 0 of 1.

A choirmaster who indecently assaulted one of his pupils is to appeal against the length of his prison sentence.

Michael Brewer, who was music director at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, was convicted in February.

He was jailed for six years for abusing Frances Andrade, from the age of 14, between 1978 and 82. She killed herself after giving evidence at his trial.

An application to seek permission to appeal will be discussed at the Court of Appeal on 12 June.

Brewer, 68, from Selly Oak in Birmingham, was convicted of five counts of indecently assaulting Mrs Andrade and sentenced at Manchester Crown Court in March.

His ex-wife Hilary Brewer, also 68, was jailed for 21 months for indecently assaulting the same victim.

In a statement released after the death of 48-year-old Mrs Andrade, from Guildford in Surrey, her son Oliver said that repeatedly being called "a liar and a fantasist" during the trial had been "more than she could bear".

The Lord Chief Justice, sitting with two other judges, will consider Brewer's application.
