The court heard that Ms Simpson had been babysitting for Ellie but had taken a cocktail of drink and drugs, mixing wine, marijuana, sleeping tablets and anti-depressants. In her police statement, which was read to the jury, Ms Simpson said that the "surreal" attack lasted for between 20 and 25 minutes and that she was "wrestling all over the room" with the dog to make it stop.
