Police have evacuated homes in a south Belfast street after reports of an explosion in the area late on Friday evening. A security alert in south Belfast on Friday night was a viable pipe bomb which had partially exploded, police have said.
Army explosives experts were called to the scene at Melrose Street and police have sealed off the area. A number of homes were evacuated around Melrose Street, just off Lisburn Road.
A PSNI spokesman said the Morton Community Centre in nearby Loren Street had been opened for residents moved from their homes. Army explosives experts were called to the scene and police cordoned off the area.
There have been no reports of anyone being injured. A PSNI spokesman said a motive has yet to be established.
