A 43-year-old man from Essex has been charged with two counts of possession of offensive weapons and affray over an attack on an Islamic centre. A man has appeared in court in connection with an incident at an Islamic centre in Braintree.
Geoffrey Ryan, from Brick Kiln Way, Braintree, is due to appear before Colchester Magistrates' Court later. Geoffrey Ryan, from Brick Kiln Way in the town, was charged with affray and two counts of possessing a weapon.
He was arrested in possession of a knife outside the building in Silks Way, Braintree on Wednesday evening. Appearing earlier at Colchester Magistrates' Court, Mr Ryan confirmed his address but did not enter a plea.
A smoke device was thrown into the premises but no one was injured. An application for bail was refused. The 43-year-old is due to reappear before magistrates via videolink on 30 May.
He was remanded in police custody to appear before magistrates on Friday.
