Driftwood Black Pearl 'pirate ship' targeted by arsonists

A pirate ship made from driftwood gathered from a Merseyside beach has been badly damaged in a suspected arson attack.

The structure, at New Brighton, Wallasey, was built by artist Frank Lund and nicknamed the Black Pearl.

Firefighters were called to the beach at about 20:10 BST on Wednesday, with police also requested to attend.

A fire service spokesman said the fire was a "suspected deliberate ignition". The fire was extinguished by 20:30 BST.
