A man died and two children were badly hurt after a VW car and lorry collided on an East Yorkshire road.

Seven people were airlifted to hospital by three helicopters after the accident on the B1248 near Bainton on Monday evening.

The 66-year-old car driver from Goole died in Hull Royal Infirmary. Two children aged two and three were seriously injured in the car.

The 29-year-old lorry driver from Tadcaster was also seriously hurt.

Both of the children, from Goole, are being treated in Hull Royal Infirmary.

A 63-year-old female front seat passenger in the VW car suffered minor injuries including whiplash and abrasions.

Broken leg

The driver of the lorry suffered a broken leg and ankle. He is also in Hull Royal Infirmary where his condition is said to be stable.

A 27-year-old woman and a three-year-old girl, both also from Tadcaster, who were in the lorry, suffered minor injuries.

Humberside Fire and Rescue spokesman Glenn Ramsden said along with the initial rescue operation, fire crews worked to prevent about 100 litres of diesel fuel from seeping into nearby drains.
