Police believe it was not a random attack and they think the killer has now fled the area. Police have described the attack as horrific.
Ch Insp Helen West said: "This is a fast-moving, developing inquiry to identify and trace the person or people responsible. They are treating it as a murder and two attempted murders.
"We are actively seeking the offender, who we believe has left the area, and a number of police units including CID, neighbourhood policing, road policing and dog units are involved in this inquiry at this time." The force believes it was an "isolated incident" and that the killer had fled the area.
She said part of Church Road would be closed on Sunday and it would cause some disruption. 'Upsetting and disturbing'
Supt Simon Nelson "Witnesses saw a horrific and tragic incident.
"A group of three men were shot at with what is believed to be a handgun and one of them was tragically killed.
"This is not gang-related and as far as I am aware not linked to any other crime.
"I am confident that there is very low risk to the community, although I understand that this has been very upsetting and disturbing for everyone, especially those who were in the area at the time."
He said neighbourhood officers were in the area to assist the Surrey and Sussex major crime team investigation and to speak to people who are worried.
Ch Insp Helen West said police were "actively seeking the offender" using a number of police units and dogs.
Church Road, between First Avenue and Selborne Road, has been cordoned off since Saturday night to allow forensic experts to examine the scene.
