Peter Tinkler, The Royal Mile Pharmacy owner, told BBC Scotland: "The situation escalated very, very quickly and certainly the perpetrator forcing me to put the key in the door to lock us in was something I hadn't anticipated.
"A hostage situation is very, very frightening indeed. It is good news we all got out safely but some were really quite shaken up by the incident.
"We had realised that eventually the police would come in and I had said to them that if somebody does come in to get down on the floor.
"So when I saw the police come in from behind me we got down on the floor, so we didn't see the Tasering but we heard it.
"It was all very, very quick, very efficient."
