A man has been led away in handcuffs following a stand-off in Edinburgh's Royal Mile. A man has been led away in handcuffs following a stand-off at a pharmacy in Edinburgh's Royal Mile.
Police earlier confirmed they were attending what they are describing as a "significant incident". Police confirmed at 21:18 that the incident had been resolved. They said a man and a woman have been detained.
Witnesses told the BBC that two people in the shop - a pharmacy - appeared to be armed with a knife or knives. A number of other people were inside. A police statement said the woman has "taken ill" and is being treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
The area around St Mary's Street has been cordoned off by police, some of them armed. A number of staff and customers were prevented from leaving the shop but they have been released unharmed.
Eight police vehicles had surrounded the Royal Mile Pharmacy. There are no reports of injuries. The incident began at about 18:00 in a shop on the High Street between Jeffrey Street and North Bridge.
Ambulance personnel and firefighters are on standby close to the police cordon. At least eight police vehicles attended and the Royal Mile was closed off.
