It is everywhere. You are reading this from it. We are so used to it, it may come as a shock that still 14 per cent of British adults have never used the internet.

The latest figures released by the ONS show that internet use in the UK is up from last year, but 7 million Britons remain unconnected.
Of the 86 per cent of Britons over the age of 16 who have used the internet, 97.1 per cent have used it in the last three months.

99 per cent of 16 to 24 year-olds, the generation that has grown up with the internet, have used the internet as of the first quarter of 2013, figures show. Only a third of people over the age of 75, 34.3 per cent to be exact, have been internet users.

However, the over 75 age group is also the group which is seeing the most rapid growth. Indeed, at the end of 2012, 30.7 per cent had used the internet, the figures now show a gain of 3.6 points, while other age groups only show a gain of between 0.1 and 1.1 percentage points.

While overall more men have used the internet than women, 88 per cent against 83 per cent, up to the age of 44, slightly more women than men have logged in online. 99.1 per cent against 99 per cent in the 16 to 24 demographic, 98.9 versus 98.6 for 25 to 34 year-olds, and 97.2 per cent of 35 to 44 year-old female in opposition to 97.1 per cent for males of the same age.
/>
/>Only 27.3 per cent of women over the age of 75 have been internet users, making them the smallest group. In contrast, 43.7 per of men in the same age category have used the internet.
/>
/>The figures released by the ONS also show that the UK is more internet-savvy than the rest of the EU. In the 27 countries that form the European Union, 22 per cent of adults had never used the internet as of the end of 2012 (Eurostat). In comparison, in the UK for the same period, 14.7 per cent of adults were non-internet users.
/>
/>It is estimated that in 2012, 2.5 billion people in the world had used the internet, the majority 1.6 billion approximately were from developing countries (ITU).
