(about 10 hours later) | |
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were among a crowd of about 17,000 spectators who attended the world-famous Braemar Gathering.
The annual event in Royal Deeside was held a short distance from Balmoral Castle, where the Queen and Prince Philip holiday every summer.
Spectators were treated to traditional heavyweight events such as tossing the caber and throwing the hammer.
Unlike previous years, no other members of the royal family attended.
The Queen, who is patron of the gathering, received a posy from 11-year-old William Marsden before she and the Duke took their seats in the Royal Pavilion.
