An Israeli Arab man critically wounded in a rocket attack during the 2006 Lebanon war has died from his wounds.

Muhammad Salum was severely burned, blinded and lost a leg when a Hezbollah rocket struck his home in the northern Israeli city of Haifa last August.

The 40-year-old had been in intensive care in a Haifa hospital since then, and there had been times when the family hoped he might recover.

He was the 40th civilian fatality of the war on the Israeli side.

Most of the 159 Israelis killed were soldiers. More than 1,000 Lebanese, most of them civilians, also died in the 34-day war.

"There were weeks when we felt that his condition may be improving. We even made sure to modify the house in order to cater to his needs, removing staircases and enabling wheelchair access," said his sister, Munira Salum.

However, she said that his condition had worsened during the last week.

The Haaretz newspaper has reported that the family has yet to receive compensation from the Israeli authorities for the damage to their house.
