Diane Tomlinson, who lives nearby, said: "My friend at 5 o'clock this morning said it was just thick black smoke everywhere.
"It's just dreadful to think that we know these people. We've seen these people walk past."
Asked what the residents at the house were like, she said: "Very quiet - keep themselves to themselves."
